Is it true that the older the car, the lower the insurance cost?
Take a moment and check out my favorite sites!
My dad has a car that is 4 years old, it is a subaru outback, with 200,000+miles on it (not a typo, he drives it all over the eastern coast). Now would the subarus insurance cost(total) be lower than if i bought my own used car?
It is not true. The insurance companies use a number of formulas to calculate cost and it is not unlikely that an older "risky" model would have a higher insurance cost than a newer "safer" model. You will also quickly find that they do not like to share this information. Years ago, insurance symbols were included in the NADA books. They quit listing it after the insurance companies stopped sharing this information.
The best way to check is to just call your Agent and ask about the different cars you are considering. You might also find the info below of interest.

due to YOUR age the subaru would be more expensive for you to insure. insurance is based on the main driver. Call your agent and get a quick quote. They don’t mind – it is their job.
The premiums can differ from year to year on a car – a 2003 Nissan 350z is more expensive than a 2004 Nissan 350z, it can really just depend on the differences in safety equipment on the 2 cars.

Not always. Some older vehicles are not as safe and don’t have as many features that get you discounts. It really depends on the model year and the model itself.

Depends. A four year old Subaru will cost much less to insure than a seven year old Mustang GT. Usually an older car IS less expensive to insure though.
